Women's health forum to feature cancer survivors

The Women's Health Education Coalition will present the 11th Annual Women's Health Forum Saturday, March 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Amador Senior Center in Jackson.

"Yes We Can... Prevent, Detect, Survive and Live with Cancer" is this year's theme. The moderator will be Beth Barnard, account executive at the Ledger Dispatch. The program will include the following topics: Prevention with Dr. Marlene Von Freiderich-Fitzwater, Ph.D.; early detection with Gloria Kent, R.N.; treatment options with Delphine Ong, M.D.; living with cancer, presented by local resources including Amador STARS, Hospice of Amador and Look Good, Feel Better; and survivors' stories about life after cancer.

After the informative forum participants will be able to: List four lifestyle factors that can be altered to reduce the potential for breast and ovarian/cervical cancer; describe three screening tests and the recommended frequency for women younger than 60 and older than 60; and describe two treatment protocols and list at least three side effects of each.

Sponsors for the forum include the Amador County Branch AAUW, Amador County Commission on Aging, Amador County Mental Health, Amador County Senior Citizens, Inc., American Legion Ambulance, First 5 Amador, Gold Country Health and Wellness, Sutter Amador Hospital and the Women's Health Education Coalition.

There is no registration fee for this event, however, pre-registration is required since space is limited and the day's program includes a light breakfast and catered lunch. Mail registration form by March 20 to Amador Senior Center, Attention: Judy Lerner-Liston, 229 New York Ranch Road, Jackson, 95642. Include your name, address and phone number; also include if you would like a vegetarian lunch and if you need child care. Indicate the number of children and their ages. Telephone registrations cannot be accepted. For more information, call the Amador Senior Center at 223-0442.

Donations to support future forums will be gladly accepted. Checks can be made out to AAUW, Amador Branch. Child care for the event will be provided by First 5 Amador.
