More than 300 bunco players were dressed in pink to support the Amador Support, Transportation and Resource Services at the Third Annual Amador County Bunco for Breast Cancer event held recently.

This event was held at St. Sava Mission and was sponsored by Pat Thurin and Pioneer Travel Service. Everyone came together to support friends and family members who have been touched by cancer.

More than 100 silent and live auction items were donated by the community. Co-chairs of the event, Ginger Rolf and Pat Thurin, were happy to see a sell-out crowd for the third year in a row. "It goes to show us once again, how lucky we are to be a part of Amador County where people come out and support everyone who needs help," Rolf said. "Last year, a speech by Anne Conrardy, who was battling breast cancer, reminded every person in the room how important it is to have regular mammograms and check ups."

The highlight of the evening was the drawing for the raffle prize. A Carnival Cruise trip, donated by Pat Thurin of Pioneer Travel, was won by Donna Jackson.

Last year, $13,000 was raised and this year the event raised more than $16,000. All money raised here, remains local except for 10 percent, which goes to research. The funds will be used to support women with cancer by supplying free scarves, caps, hats and wigs. Free transportation is provided by Amador STARS to all cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Amador STARS would also like to remind the community they are in need of licensed cosmetologists to assist with a Look Good Feel Better Program that is co-sponsored by Amador STARS and the American Cancer Society. The program provides make-up techniques, scarf tricks and wig information to women going through cancer treatment. "We really want to spread the word about our free wig program for women who lose their hair during cancer treatments," said Rolf, who is also the director of Amador STARS. Without licensed volunteers, the program cannot continue. To volunteer, call the Amador STARS office at 223-1246.
