Cancer support group for women forming in Amador County

Tuesday, September 04, 2007

Sweet Pea Septic
Four women with a heart for other women who are experiencing cancer have formed a support group in Amador that will hold it's first meeting Oct. 5 in Jackson.

The group, called "Just Begin ... Again," was inspired by a poem written by Royce Addington with the same name and offers inspirational words of support and new beginnings. The group plans to meet the first Friday of every month and welcomes all women with any type of cancer, post or present, to join. "About five years ago there was a very active women's cancer support group called Bosom Buddies," said Amador Support, Transportation and Resource Services Director Ginger Rolf. "They disbanded and left a huge void in our community. We have been approached many times to hold a women's support group, however until now we never had anyone willing to take the leadership."

Joanna Pierotti helped form Just Begin ... Again and is a recent breast cancer survivor. "Joanna has shown her passion to join other women along their cancer journey," Rolf said.

Amador STARS is sponsoring the group and will have a banner displayed at the Camp Out for Cancer Sept. 22 and 23 with an information table containing details about the new women's support group. Rolf feels the camp out event is a good vehicle to reach many more people and "will help in getting this group moving forward."

The Amador STARS and Just Begin ... Again met with the desire to form a group and felt it is a positive thing for the community. "We felt the same enthusiasm and support that had been a part of the Bosom Buddies." Rolf said. "We knew that we could financially help this group to get on its feet as well as offer local phone numbers and office staff to assist women who are looking to make that connection." Rolf added that they will refer local women to the group whether they want to attend a meeting or are just looking for someone to talk with on the phone.

Refreshments will be served at the first "Get to know each other" meeting and attendees are encouraged to share suggestions for future meetings and hear ideas for those in the works such as pot lucks, craft times, occasional speakers and a Christmas Tea. If anyone would like more information on Just Begin ... Again, call Amador STARS at 223-1246 or visit www.amadorstars.org. Unique merchandise from T-shirts to throw pillows and pet clothing with the Just Begin ... Again logo is available on their Web site at www.justbeginagain.com.
