Residents Michael and Vicki Mason of Volcano are the proud parents of Taylor and son-in-law Jordan Larson, who recently traveled to Normandy, France, for the World Equestrian Games. Jordan joined the US team of five athletes, after a series of qualifying shows here in the states, with his horse, MF Mobster, lovingly nicknamed Joey. It is the largest equestrian event in the world with 72 nations participating, and 147 horses in the reining competition alone. “The opening ceremonies for the WEG were as grand as any seen in the... Mississippi State at Alabama

These neighboring schools have played 97 times since their first meeting in 1896. Never has so much been at stake. Mississippi State is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Alabama is 8–1 overall and 5–1 in the SEC. The winner will seize control of the SEC West race (though both teams still have significant challenges ahead) and be well-situated for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Alabama probably cannot afford a loss; the Tide simply don’t have enough quality wins (even with a potential...

The 190th meeting of the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears — the NFL’s oldest rivalry, which dates back to 1921 — was one for the history books. The Cheeseheads had Lambeau Field rocking in prime time on Sunday night, during a 55–14 victory over their longtime rivals in the NFC North.

The Packers scored a Lambeau-record-tying 55 points en route to the second-largest margin of victory (41) over the Bears in the series’ 93-year history. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw six touchdowns — highlighted by a 73-yard scoring strike to Jordy...

With one lap remaining Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, Jeff Gordon seemed to have gained the foothold he needed to put away the nightmare finish a week earlier in Texas and advance to the final round of NASCAR’s new Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Gordon, firmly running second, had stalked Kevin Harvick for much of the race’s back half but could never get close enough to pass. He had to cede that second best was going to be the best-case scenario for a shot at the title in Miami. The plan worked: Gordon crossed the finish line in...

The San Francisco Giants have been here before. Twice recently, actually. Having won the World Series in 2010 and ’12, this team oozes postseason experience. No stage is too big for these guys, no spotlight too bright. In contrast, the American League champion Kansas City Royals have two players with World Series experience. James Shields made one start in the 2008 Series for Tampa Bay and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings. Second baseman Omar Infante had one plate appearance off the bench for Detroit in 2006, and was the Tigers’... [Read more]

The injury situation got worse this past Sunday, as the list of key fantasy football players who won’t play in Week 7 only got longer. Victor Cruz and Stevan Ridley are the latest to watch their seasons come to an early end, while A.J. Green and Jimmy Graham are among those expected to miss at least one more game. On top of that, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay are both on bye this week. So what’s a beleaguered fantasy owner to do?

Athlon Sports is here to help you sort through some of the potential free agent options. The players...

Cleveland Comeback

Browns score 26 unanswered points to win on the road at Titans

Johnny Football couldn’t help but laugh on the sideline when the Browns fell behind 28–3 on the road at Tennessee following a 75-yard touchdown strike from Charlie Whitehurst to Justin Hunter late in the second quarter.

“Down 28–3,” said first-year Cleveland coach Mike Pettine, “I think you could term how we were playing ‘laughable.’ But I don’t know the context of (Manziel’s reaction).”

Even in a baseball cap on the sideline, the cameras are...

If you were looking for the moment when this new version of Chase for the Sprint Cup would catch another gear and spew unmitigated drama out of the exhaust, well, we’re about there.

Two races from now — starting with the fall trip to Charlotte Motor Speedway for 500 miles on Saturday night and concluding the week after with the anything-goes adventure at Talladega Superspeedway — four more of the 16 drivers NASCAR selected for the championship fight will be knocked out of the mix. And as it stands, those closest to facing elimination...

The train descending into Sutter Creek Friday, Sept. 26, 2014. Amador Ledger photo by Bill Lavallie.

As first reported yesterday afternoon online, a horse in the wagon train of the Days of 49 has suffered a fatal injury. Dianne Quierolo Bennett, a frequent contributor to the Amador Ledger Dispatch, said the horse died quickly, and did not suffer after collapsing in Sutter Creek.

"The horse was part of a four horse Percheron hitch," she wrote in a post on social media. "It had a heart attack or aneurism and went down. Vet was on the wagon and at the horse within 30 seconds. There was nothing he could do, the horse went quick. They...

The definition of a criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 1 mile), often run on closed-off city center streets. Here’s an exceptional chance for runners to take to the streets crit style and enjoy plenty of goodies! The Inaugural Lodi Cyclefest 5K Run, will be held on Sunday, July 12, (taking place a few hours prior to the Fifth Annual Cyclefest criterium bike race), in downtown Lodi.

Just like proceeding bike criterium, participants will run four laps on the downtown Lodi .8 mile course with...

Justin Mendoza is 23 years old. Born and raised in Jackson, he attended Argonaut high school and received his AA at Columbia College, in Sonora. Growing up, Justin played competitive basketball, raced competitive motocross and finally found his passion in triathlon. School was definitely not his passion. As soon as he finished, he decided to make the leap and go after the professional world of triathlon.

In October, 2013, Mendoza competed in his first Olympic-distance triathlon, which included a .94-mile swim, 24-mile bike ride...

Playoffs started last Sunday in the Amador County Recreation Agency Men’s Basketball League. The top four teams made the playoffs for a chance to compete for the league championship, while the bottom four teams entered into a consolation bracket.

The first game of the night was the 5th seed, Basket Brawlers, vs. the 8th seed, Code 3 Ballers. The Basket Brawlers barely missed the playoffs, losing three close games by a total of 10 points during the regular season. They started the game off with a big lead and never looked back....
