Cleanup will take place at the steep embankment below the athletic field at Jackson Junior High School. Photo courtesy to the Amador Ledger Dispatch
As part of the ongoing cleanup work in Jackson, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will stabilize and cover a large, steep embankment below the athletic field at Jackson Junior High School. The embankment is partially composed of mine tailings and has been found to contain high levels of arsenic. While the slopes of the embankment are not generally accessed by students, EPA would like to ensure protection of human health by cleaning up this area. The slopes will be capped with shotcrete, which will limit potential... [Read more]

With your help we can place Amador County’s entire printed history online. Just imagine strolling back to 1855 in a searchable website.
We are in danger of losing our history. Newspapers have been published since 1855 under different mastheads. And for years, folks looking to dig into history have ventured to the Amador County Public Library to seek information on microfilm. The problem – microfilm has a life cycle. In fact, one of the machines used to search past publications is one that no longer has parts made for it or can be serviced. Thankfully, a second machine was graciously donated to assist the public. But even with that amazing gift, the microfilm... [Read more]

Stockton Heat Head Coach Ryan Huska. Photo courtesy to the Amador Ledger Dispatch

As we enter our inaugural season of AHL hockey in Stockton, we thought it would be a good idea to take a deeper look at the hockey operations staff traveling West from Glens Falls and give the fans an idea of just who will be running the hockey side of things both behind the bench and in the dressing room.

We start our series with, of course, the Head Coach Ryan Huska.

Ryan Huska began his coaching career in Kelowna where he coached as an assistant for five seasons before becoming the head man for the next seven seasons....

Considered to be one of the toughest endurance races in the world, the annual Race Across AMerica, or RAAM, is only for adventurous people who enjoy a challenge. Robert Baldino, resident of Jackson and the captain of Team Cyclonauts, recently completed this coast-to-coast bike race across America for the fourth time.

The race started in Oceanside, CA, and ended in Annapolis, Maryland. Since the race lasted only seven days, the cyclist rode over 100 miles a day. “We didn’t stop or take breaks unless we had to- we essentially were...

It’s been a trying final season for veteran bodybuilder Arthur Peacock. If coming off of a three-year hiatus due to health issues that included major surgery aren’t enough, the seasoned champion will turn 80 this year. His first bout back on stage, the famously challenging Contra Costa Bodybuilding Championship, lead to a heart attack after exiting stage right, and then a technical disqualification. But Peacock wasn’t deterred, and the next month would leave the world of bodybuilding in awe.

No less than three weeks after heart...

Week two of ACRA’s flag football season had a little bit of everything: close calls, high scores and tight contests. Amador Ledger Dispatch photo by John Williamson
Week 2 of ACRA’s Youth Flag Football League is in the books. The first game of the night featured the Four Acres Landscaping team versus the Umpqua Bank Team. Four Acres had a rough start, as they fumbled the ball in the endzone on the first snap for a safety. Umpqua had a great start. They handed the ball off to Donald Almeida who juked and sprinted his way for a long touchdown, 8-0 Umpqua. Umpqua got the ball again and Nathen Garza threw a touchdown pass to Almeida, 14-0. Four Acres got on the board when Alex Girton got a handoff... [Read more]

Major League Baseball had their Home Run Derby and so did the Amador County Recreation Agency (ACRA). ACRA’s Home Run Derby is a lot different from the MLB. ACRA’s Derby was at Pioneer Park where they host a Slow Pitch Softball Men’s League. The Derby was also slow pitch. Players entered the derby by paying $20 each. They get 12 pitches and can swing 10 times. This means they can only watch two pitches go by them without swinging. The batter gets to pick his own pitcher, but having to throw perfect pitches puts some pressure on the... [Read more]

The Spring 2015 ACRA Women’s Basketball League has come to an end. There were six teams in this league for the first time ever, and after the regular season there were two teams at the top. The two teams in the Championship game have had a fun rivalry going between each other in this league over the past few seasons.

Hanford House is a team that has won this league almost every year. They played a team where everyone but one player is either an Argonaut High School alumni or a student. This team has been around for a while in...

Ron DeGrange was raised in Ione, Amador County California. As a youngster, his heroes were the cowboys who worked on the 36,000 acre Arroyo Seco Spanish Land grant Ranch headquarters there in Ione. These cowboys included Dick Lavingnino, Bill Waddell and Jerry Lamb.

When DeGrange graduated from Ione High School, he took a job starting colts for Harold Cummins in Sutter Creek, trying to learn the trade. Harold, being a horse trader from time to time, would buy mustang colts off the Nevada Desert, as well as raise some nice quarter...
