The Sacramento River Cats are ready to make Memorial Day memories. Photo courtesy to the ALD

It’s another jam-packed weekend at Raley Field, but this one could be my favorite. We get to honor servicemen and women from all over the Sacramento region for Salute to Armed Forces, and the flight suit jerseys we’ve teed up will make it a night to remember. Also, I love seeing all the families that come out for KLOVE Sunday Fundays and for our annual Memorial Day BBQ. Make River Cats baseball part of your Memorial Day Weekend plans!

Friday, May 27 vs. Oklahoma City Dodgers (LAD) @ 7:05 p.m.

Question: I just took my first Hunter Education Class last week at the age of almost 60. I am interested to put my training into practice and bring my kids and grandkids into it as well. What is a good plan to begin hunting that can include all of us, since I have never had anyone to teach me how to start? (Ken B., Palo Alto)

Answer: First of all, welcome to the exciting camaraderie of California hunters. We can recommend several options. First, put your new Hunter Education Certificate to use right away by purchasing your hunting...

Early afternoon on Thursday, May 19, expect Amgen to be passing through Amador County. Rolling closures can cause delays of 10-15 minutes, so plan accordingly.

The Amgen Tour of California will be zipping into town this Thursday, May 19.

As one of the longest and most challenging routes in race history, the fifth stage of the AMGEN Tour of California 2016 will be passing through Amador County on May 19. The AMGEN Tour is a Tour de France-style cycling road race that will be staged throughout California, and it just happens to include a long stretch of road in Amador County.

For most of the way through Amador County, the cyclists will be following Highway 88, beginning in the...

Last year, shortly after the Northern California Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech, Zane Mathison received an iPad with an ACC app. Photo courtesy to the Amador Ledger Dispatch

As you may recall, this past month I published information regarding the 2016 Northern California Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech which will take place on May 14 at Amador High School, 330 Spanish Street, Sutter Creek.

May 14, also happens to be Apraxia Awareness Day at Amador High School. For those of you unfamiliar with apraxia of speech, it is caused by brain disease or damage. The brain is unable to make and deliver correct movement instructions to the body.

One type of apraxia affects speech. The brain struggles...

DIY Personal Domoic Acid Testing of Crabs?

Question: Is there any kind of Domoic acid test kit available that a consumer can use to test his/her own crabs? I would think there would be a lot of interest in this. I love to catch and eat crabs but also hate risking getting sick! (Bob W.)

Answer: If you do a google search you will find some kits that state they will detect Domoic acid toxins in shellfish, marine algae and water samples. However, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW)...

Tips for residents and campers on bears. Photo courtesy to the ALD

With an estimated 35,000 bears, California has a healthy and growing black bear population. In spring hibernating bears emerge from their winter slumber and begin an almost perpetual search for food. It is not uncommon for a black bear to consume up to 20,000 calories a day. Unfortunately, this search can sometimes lead bears into populated areas and conflicts with humans.

"A bear's nose is seven times better than a hound dog's, and it will lead a bear to anything that is edible or smelly," said Marc Kenyon, the California...

An active military training facility, Fort Hunter Liggett has sponsored tule elk hunts since 1996. However, the facility's primary mission is to support military training, and due to increased operational requirements, a portion of the grounds must be closed to the public. A question or two on abalone covered in California Outdoors Q&As. Photo courtesy to the ALD

Selling Tickets for a Fundraiser Serving Abalone?

Question: My husband and I dive for abalone in Humboldt where we live. If we don’t consume them right away, we freeze them whole in the shell as the local wildlife officer advised us years ago. I also work for a nonprofit hospice in Sutter County and they will soon have a fundraiser at a private house where many of our staff will prepare appetizers for 100 guests. I want to prepare abalone appetizers from three abalone that we already have tagged and frozen from last season. The...
