A Redwood City couple remains behind the gray bars of the Amador County Jail this morning charged with auto theft and drug possession after getting caught up in a dragnet of officers looking for a shoplifting suspect.

The Amador County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to Walmart July 1, just after six p.m. where a theft had been reported involving a man in his twenties, wearing a white tank top and black shorts. The suspect reportedly fled northeast from the store on Wicklow Way.

Approximately 5 minutes later, an ACSO deputy observed a subject matching the description (physical and clothing) of the suspect, fueling a white 2014 Honda Accord sedan at the Shell gas station on Ridge Road at Highway 49 in Sutter Creek. The deputy detained the subject and determined the vehicle was stolen out of Redwood City. A search of the vehicle revealed two methamphetamine smoking pipes and a usable quantity of methamphetamine.

A loss prevention officer from Walmart responded to the scene and conducted an “in-field show up” of the suspect — who turned out not to be the man he was looking for. The loss prevention officer told officers he was positive the detained subject was not responsible for the theft at Walmart.

Ultimately, Jason Matthew Gross, 28, of Redwood City was arrested and charged with auto theft. Gross’ girlfriend, Heather Leann Brown, 30, also of Redwood City was also arrested at the scene and charged with auto theft, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
