Evelyn Lee “Bebe” Prouty

June 28, 1946 - July 24, 2014

Evelyn Lee Prouty, aka “Bebe,” 68, of Manteca, Calif., died on July 24, 2014 from natural causes after a long battle with kidney problems.

Evelyn was born in Stockton, Calif., on June 28, 1946. She graduated from Manteca High School, class of 1964, and continued on to receive a lifetime of wisdom. Evelyn researched and authored “Manteca; Selective Chapters from Its History” (available for purchase at the Manteca Museum). She was inducted into Manteca’s Hall of Fame for Community Service in 2010.

Evelyn worked as a reporter/editor/journalist/author/publisher/entrepreneur/and gravedigger. Prouty is a 1960 graduate of French Camp Grammar School and a 1964 graduate of Manteca High School. She also attended Delta College.

From March, 2008, until recently, she served as executive director of the Manteca Historical Society. She was publisher of the Fickle Nickel Press from 1992 to 2008, managing editor of the Amador Ledger Dispatch from 1980 to 1992, and served as the people editor for the Manteca Bulletin from 1974 to 1980.

She enjoyed genealogy, gardening, writing, history and spending time with her family. She was also actively involved in the Manteca Historical Society/Museum, where she served as President for several terms. She was also the first curator of the Manteca Museum. She volunteered for numerous activities for the Historical Society and was heavily involved in maintaining and caring for East Union Cemetery, in Manteca.

She is survived by her life partner, Bill Good, of Manteca; son, Alan Thompson and Cammie Blankenship, of Manteca; daughter, Kathy (Thompson) Van Steyn and son-in-law David Van Steyn, Sr., of Galt; grandchildren, Chelsea Van Steyn, of Galt, Renee Ramirez, of Manteca, and Jose Ramirez, of Galt, as well as other family and friends.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Richard Lee Prouty and Muriel May (Miller) Prouty and daughter, Kendra Lee Thompson.

P.L. Fry & Son is honored to be serving Evelyn’s family. Services will be held Monday August 4, at 10 a.m., at P.L. Fry & Son, 290 N. Union Rd, Manteca. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Manteca Historical Society, P.O. Box 907 Manteca CA 95336, or deliver them in person to the Manteca Museum, 600 W. Yosemite Ave, Manteca.
