Robert Vela, Jackson native, was recently named one of the top ten finalists in the Records of Life Contest. The goal of the contest was to design child health records to be better understood by parents and to be more flexible for health workers. The specific focus of Vela’s project was on improving designs for developing nations with issues like poverty, low literacy and limited resources.

Vela’s “EZ Immunization Form,” had a brochure that was then put into an envelope with lots of information on it. The hardest part, according to Vela, was to properly understand the viewpoint of the intended users. But Vela, who is currently studying design and visual communications at UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts, said he took so much away from this experience that it’s hard to pinpoint a single highlight. “The entire experience really just gave me a new perspective of not only the world of design, but the wide array of roles design can play in influencing and shaping our future,” said Vela, who grew up in Jackson.
