Ben and Celia Price, owners of Mother Lode Music for the past 12 years, are retiring and handing over ownership of the store to Lance Harmon. Harmon has been teaching guitar at the Music Store for ten years, and will become the new owner this weekend.

When asked why the couple decided Harmon should assume the helm, Celia replied, “We wanted someone with capable hands and a love of music. Someone to help keep music alive in the county.” Harmon recalled that one day after he had finished giving a music lesson, Ben asked him straightforwardly if he wanted to buy the store. After a few months of ongoing discussion and consideration, the process of changing hands was in the works.

Harmon is 29 years old, and has two children, Thomas, two years old, and Lucy, six months old, with his wife Elisabeth. As Harmon enjoys being around the music community, he is excited to make the store his own, while still keeping the charm and originality put in place by the Prices. When asked if he was planning on making any changes to the store, Harmon responded, “Not too much too quick, but I have tons of ideas — from Ben and Celia, and others, as well.” The Music Store is currently undergoing remodeling to make more teaching rooms available, as well as creating an in-store recording studio. Harmon also wants to focus more on supplying the necessary equipment needed for home recording.

Mother Lode Music offers private lessons for numerous instruments, such as piano, guitar, violin and more, from seven different teachers, and group lessons for guitar and ukulele. The services offered by the Music Store range from orchestra rentals, repairs, a variety of stringed instrument sales, sheet music and much more.

The Mother Lode Music Store began on Main Street, in downtown Jackson, and after moving three times, is now located in a much larger space on Prospect Drive, in Martell. Whether you are a musician yourself or just a music enthusiast, stop in for a visit to this musical gem. Ben and Celia will continue to be involved in the musical happenings around the county and with Friends of Music. Watch for a future open house date, and plan to help celebrate the Prices’ dedication to Amador County music, and the new owner of Mother Lode Music.
