Access issues could cause Amador City, Volcano polling places to change

Friday, September 10, 2004

AMERICAN LEGION POST 108
The Amador County Registrar of Voters likely will have to find two new voting locations for Amador City and Volcano for the November elections, George Allen, county deputy registrar of voters said Wednesday.

Access is the issue, he said. An Oakland consultant, Ken Blackseth, has assisted the registrar's office in updating county polling places in light of the Americans with Disabilities Act and state regulations.

Allen said Blackseth would be making recommendations for changes at various polling places in the county, although two places seem to be unusable.

At Volcano Armory Hall, 21349 Consolation Street, Volcano's only polling place, Allen said the steps into the building are four feet high, making it improbable to remedy the accessibility with a wheelchair ramp because the ramp would be too long, according to regulations.

The problem at Amador City Hall - the city's only polling place - is a lack of handicapped-only-designated parking and could stop the use of the facility.

He said the Fiddletown polling place of Moose Lodge had been a problem location in light of new law due to its gravel parking lot, but the lot has since been chipped and sealed.

Other corrections around the county might include doors, access and travel routes.

Allen said the Volcano and Amador City polling places are likely to be moved, bringing up the problem of finding another place in town to serve as a polling place, while still meeting accessibility standards.

Jan Price, a clerk in the registrar's office said the state's Voter Information Guide should be getting mailed to registered voters by Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, while the county office will send the guides to anyone who registers to vote fewer than 60 days before the Nov. 2 election.

The 165-page guide includes the text of 16 state-wide ballot measures.

Allen said county ballot designs are nearing completion, the back sides of which will be filled with the 16 propositions.
