One person died and two were flown to hospitals after an early morning crash on Highway 88 near Twin Bridges in the Ione area on July 18 at 7:25 a.m.

Bernardo Ysauro, 84, from Stockton, lost his life that morning after his 2008 Buick collided head-on with a 1993 Ford driven by Victor Ray Callahan, 52, of Tracy. Callahan's car had drifted into the oncoming traffic. Ysauro's passenger, Mildred Lujan, 92, suffered major injuries - spinal fractures and internal injuries - and she was taken to Mercy San Juan Hospital in Rancho Cordova.

Based on initial observation and investigations, California Highway Patrol officers had reason to believe that Callahan was under the influence of drugs when driving that morning. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence. He also suffered major injuries and was taken to University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

On Friday, Marvin Alvarado of Pioneer was injured after driving his 1997 GMC Yukon into a pine tree at about 4:45 p.m. Alvarado allegedly was speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. He was arrested for DUI.

The next day, a young driver went off the road and overturned in Ione. He indicated that the hood of the pickup opened up and he was unable to see the road. The driver suffered only a minor cut and was able to extract himself from the vehicle.

Later Saturday, Wesley Hieb of Lodi was injured after driving his Harley-Davidson eastbound on Shenandoah Road into another Harley-Davidson driven by Frederick Brune, 60, of Pioneer. Brune slowed down to make a right turn onto Ostrom Road. Hieb applied his brakes, which made his motorcycle skid. Hieb's front tire struck Brune's rear tire, which made Hieb's Harley-Davidson go down on its left side. Hieb and his passenger, Shelly Segale, 48, of Lodi, were ejected from the motorcycle. Hieb was taken to Sutter Amador Hospital with moderate injuries and Segale was transported via helicopter to Mercy San Juan Hospital. Brune and his passenger, Donna Brune, 58, of Pioneer, sustained no injuries.

Sunday at about 5:50 p.m., a motorcycle traveling east through Pine Grove was struck when a driver pulled out of a road into its path. The car had major damage to the driver's side of the vehicle.

The driver of the motorcycle, Kurt Blankenship, 56, of Pine Grove, was moderately injured and taken to Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson. Blankenship suffered an injury to his leg and had other cuts and bruises. He was wearing his helmet and other protective gear at the time of the collision.

Around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, a car traveling south on Highway 49 crossed over the center line and sideswiped a northbound logging truck. The car struck the truck, then spun around and crashed into the Sutter Creek bridge-side abutment. Emergency personnel had to free the female driver using the Jaws of Life. The driver was later released from the hospital after being treated for minor injuries.
