A cruise through the foothills turned deadly Oct. 3 when a Wallace man was fatally injured on the roads stretching through Amador's wine country.
The incident occurred at 2:30 p.m. as Bill George was taking his 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle up Fiddletown Road out of Plymouth. Near Burk Drive, George began to allow his bike to drift off the roadway. Officers from the California Highway Patrol said it's unclear why George allowed this to happened.
As the motorcycle cut through the north shoulder of the road and veered into a pasture, George was thrown off. A citizen driving by noticed signs of the wreck and quickly pulled over to help. The motorist attempted to give life-saving aid to George until emergency responders arrived on the scene. George was rushed to the trauma center at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Sacramento, where he succumbed to his injuries.
On Oct. 7, a San Andreas vehicle accident also led to roadside injuries - and an arrest.
It was 8:29 p.m. when 24-year-old Jonathan Giuffra was driving westbound on Mountain Ranch Road, approaching Highway 49. Around the same time, 85-year-old San Andreas resident Wesley Andahl was coming down the highway from the other direction. According to the CHP, Giuffra failed to stop at a posted stop sign and slammed directly into Andahl's 2007 Chevrolet. The older driver's vehicle took the full force of Giuffra's Jeep hitting it from the side. After the collision, both men waited for the CHP to arrive.
Officers gave Giuffra a field sobriety test, which he failed. Suffering from only minor injuries, Giuffra was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Andahl was not hurt in the accident.
