Human leg found in the Mokelumne River

Sunday, November 08, 2009

Detectives from the Amador County Sheriff's Office were working late last night after human remains were discovered in the Upcountry region of Amador County.

Undersheriff Jim Wegner confirmed to the Ledger Dispatch at 6 p.m. Sunday that, four hours earlier, a man had called law enforcement after spotting what appeared to be a human leg in the Mokelumne River just west of Salt Springs Dam. The man was in a remote, densely wooded area near the PG&E waterway. He used a radio to call for help.

Wegner said the object had been located by sheriff's personnel and was in fact a human leg. Because it was found in the middle of the river, Wegner notified the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department as well.

"The river splits the county lines," Wegner observed. "We'll be working with Calaveras on it."
