The grisly discovery of a human leg Sunday afternoon in the middle of the Mokelumne River has now led to a full human corpse being recovered from the wooded river canyon.
Detectives from the Amador County Sheriff's Office were first alerted to the human remains Sunday at 2 p.m., after a fisherman spotted what he was sure was a human leg in the river, just west of Salt Springs Dam. The leg was still wearing a shoe. The man used a radio to call for help, which soon brought Sheriff's office personnel to the remote, rugged terrain along the PG&E flume.
Amador County detectives worked late into the night, as they removed the decomposing leg and searched for other pieces of the corpse. After the operation was temporarily halted until morning, some officers remained to guard the scene until a joint team from the Amador County Sheriff's Office and Calaveras County Sheriff's Office could return together at daybreak. The leg had been found in a part of the river that forms the county lines. Detectives from the Stockton Police Department also took part in the search effort.
By last night, the body had been recovered. The identity of the individual and cause of death have yet to be determined. Amador County Undersheriff Jim Wegner said his office was releasing the remains into the custody of the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office, who will take over the investigation.
