An assault call in Fiddletown triggered widespread problems for law enforcement Monday morning after a couple fleeing in a car from a potential crime scene nearly hit a sheriff's vehicle and then crashed on the roadside - injuring two small children.

The incident began at 6:45 a.m., when a Fiddletown woman called 911 operators to report that her 25-year-old daughter had assaulted her. As sheriff's deputies headed out to the scene, the woman called again, saying that her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend had fled her home on Timberland Drive in a black Volkswagen Jetta. She added that the couple had two children with them in the car.

On Fiddletown Road, east of Fiddletown, the deputies spotted the Volkswagen speeding toward them in the westbound lane. According to Amador County Undersheriff Jim Wegner, its driver swerved at the two responding sheriff vehicles, forcing the second unit to leave the road in order to avoid being hit. That deputy flipped his lights on and went in pursuit of the Volkswagen down the curving, wooded roadway. He soon discovered it overturned on its roof.

The deputy called for medical help as he attempted to render assistance. Fire department first responders and the California Highway Patrol were soon present. All four occupants of the Volkswagen were transported to area hospitals for treatment, including a 4-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl.

Wegner said Chace McKenzie Summey, 25, of Fiddletown, was the driver of the Volkswagen. Summey was arrested at Sutter Amador Hospital and charged with two counts of child endangerment causing injury, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm on a peace officer and one count of obstructing a peace officer. Summey's bail was set at $50,000.
