Sierra Repertory Theatre comes alive with timeless classic, “The Sound of Music.” Based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, in 1930’s Austria, a young girl named Maria leaves the safety of her convent to go on an unexpected journey with seven children and a naval captain, with only her own confidence and guitar by her side.

Rhyn Saver plays Maria in such a way that even Julie Andrews would approve, with just the right amount of stubborn innocence to be flawlessly charming. The seven Von Trapp children are exceptionally well-cast, behaving as genuine siblings with joy, laughter and playful teasing. From oldest to youngest: Stefani Potter, as the love-struck “16, going-on-17” year old, Leisl; Jaymie Jackson, as the “impossible” Friedrich; Chloe Kerr, as Louisa; Grace Miller, as Marta; Makena Early, as Brigitta; Will Otterson, as the little trouble-maker, Kurt; and Ruby Elaine James, gracing the stage as a most darling Gretl. Franz, played by Renney Doser, brings both humor and grief, as well as an impressive singing voice. If the powerful solo, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” from the Mother Abbess, played by Victoria Strong, does not win your heart, then it will surely be won by John C. Brown, playing Captain Von Trapp, when he sings “Edelweiss,” an emotional and patriotic tribute to his beloved homeland, Austria.

The pre-recorded music is presented through special arrangement with R & H Theatricals, and even on Opening Night, the actors hardly lagged or preceded a cue by more than a second. The audience could not help but join the fun and hum along with, “My Favorite Things” and “Do-Re-Mi.”

Directed and choreographed by Scott Viets, this show of courage, love, music, faith and patriotism is not to be missed. Playing at Fallon House Theatre, in Historic Columbia State Park, July 11 through August 31. Tickets are $26 to $32 for general admission, with child, group, senior and student discounts available.
