Rotary Goes Hollywood was the theme for this year’s Rotary Conference for District 5190, held at John Ascuaga’s Nugget, in Sparks, Nevada, from May 15 through 18. The annual speech contest featured 13 speakers from each area of the district, all of whom were required to win at both the club and area levels. The topic was, “Engage Rotary, Change Lives: Living a Life of Service Above Self.”

Competing with the 12 other speakers, Amador High senior Carisa Swason won the contest and received $1,000 for first place. Swanson represented Area 7, which includes the following Rotary Clubs: Amador Upcountry, Jackson, Ione and Plymouth-Foothills. This year, the sponsoring club for Area 7 was Amador Upcountry. Two years ago, Swason’s sister, Cecily Swason, of Amador High, won the contest, and four years ago it was Caitlin Schaap, another Amador High graduate, who took first place. All three girls were drama students at Amador High.
