Calaveras deputies responding to a report of a person stealing water have uncovered a moderately large marijuana grow in the Copperopolis area.

A report from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said the deputies, along with officers from the California Highway Patrol, made the discovery July 10.

Both agencies were conducting a joint operation to eradicate the illegal marijuana grow when they spotted a man fleeing from the grow site. Edgar Lopez, whose age and place of residence was not released. Lopez was quickly located hiding in some brush and arrested.

Lopez allegedly estimated that each of the approximately 3,700 marijuana plants destroyed in the operation would produce marijuana with a street value of over $1,000 per plant.

Lopez was booked into the Calaveras County Jail on charges of illegal cultivation of marijuana with bail set at $20,000.
