Ione Red claims Native Sons Invitational title

Twelve eighth-grade boys basketball teams from Amador, Calaveras and San Joaquin counties competed in the Amador Parlor No. 17, Native Sons of the Golden West Invitational Basketball Tournament, held at Ione Junior High School Jan. 23 to Jan. 30. Twenty games were played during the five days of the tournament. The sportsmanship award was given to St. Anne's School of Lodi, which lost to St. Michael's of Stockton 42-32 in the consolation runner-up game. Toyon defeated Jackson 73-42 in the consolation game, Linden defeated Greer Middle School of Galt 44-32 in the seventh-place game and Jefferson School of Tracy defeated Mark Twain 41-33 In the fifth-place game.

Soulsbyville defeated Ione White 54-50 in the third-place game but the Ione Red team won the championship game, defeating Avery Middle School by a score of 5-546.

The players, coaches, parents and fans extended their thanks to Amador Parlor No.17, Native Sons of the Golden West, for sponsoring the tournament awards. The tournament would not have been possible without the help of those volunteers who spent time as officials, scorekeepers, timers, snack bar attendants and admission clerks. Special thanks were also expressed to Mr. Tom Reed, Ione Junior High School Principal, who donated many hours beyond his regular work day to supervise the tournament.
