Keeper King is MLL soccer defensive player of the year

Mustangs' Ricardo Ordaz, coach Roque Mireles join Herd's Alex Fischer, Andrew Corsaletti in All-MLL soccer first team honors

Amador High School senior goalkeeper Mathias King was voted by Mother Lode League coaches as the MLL Defensive Player of the Year for the 2007 varsity soccer season, the coaches announced last week.

On Monday, King and teammate, senior forward Andrew Corsaletti and senior defender Alex Fischer, joined the ranks of the First Team All-MLL for the team photo on the Calaveras High School football/soccer field.

The Amador goalkeeper King finished with 149 saves, while allowing 15 goals in 19 games played for the Thundering Herd of Sutter Creek. Corsaletti, also a first-teamer, finished with seven goals, tied for third in the MLL, in helping Amador to a 6-10-7 overall record and a 4-6-5 finish for third place in the MLL. Corsaletti finished with three assists and King also had one assist and recorded four shutouts.

Amador also had two players make second team all league and two make the honorable mention squad. Three from the Herd also made the all-academic team.

Junior midfielders Joey Wall and Tanner Scholtes were named to the Second Team All-League squad for Amador. Wall had two goals for Amador and Scholtes had three. Both had an assist.

Getting Honorable Mention were junior defender Matt Stevens and junior forward Nico Andriani. Andriani finished with four goal and four assists in eight games for the Herd.

Making the all-academic squad for Amador were Caleb Fountain, Scholtes and Wall.

Argonaut coach Roque Mireles named co-coach of the year in MLL soccer

Argonaut High School coach Roque Mireles was selected Mother Lode League co-coach of the year by league coaches and was joined in all-star honors by the Mustangs' first-team all-league senior forward Ricardo Ordaz.

The Mustangs also had two freshmen selected to the Section Team All-League squad. Both midfielders, freshmen Russ Ellyson and Matt Riebe were named second teamers.

Argonaut also had two players receive honorable mention awards from MLL coaches' voting. Sophomore Craighton Hancock, the second-year Mustang goalkeeper took honorable mention, as did junior defender Sergio Valencia.

Four other players from Argonaut made the All Academic Team.

They were Mike Adair, James Common, Travis McDaniel and Riebe.

The Mother Lode League All-Star Team announcement included four Linden High School players taking first team honors, including Offensive Player of the Year Manuel Perez.

Perez, a junior at Linden was second in MLL scoring with 22 goals and was tied for third in assists with seven in helping lead the Lions to the league championship, finishing 17-4 overall and undefeated in MLL play with a 15-0 record.

Joining Perez on the first team were junior midfielders Luis Duran and Ivan Miranda. Duran led league scoring with 23 goals and second in assists with eight in 18 games. Miranda was tied for third in assists with seven and also hit seven goals.

Also on the first team all-league squad was Linden junior defender Chris Whitesides, who led the league in assists with 17.

Second place MLL finishers Calaveras High School also had four first-team all-stars, including Midfielder of the Year Dakota Stockert, a senior.

Defensive Player of the Year was Mathias King, an Amador High School senior, who had 149 saves and allowed 15 goals in 19 games with four shutouts and an assist.

Co-Coaches of the Year were Roque Mireles of Argonaut High School and Rudy van Heiningen of Calaveras.
